The Contenders started rehearsing in June 2007 following a conversation between Pete Messer and Steve Williams. Both fancied getting together to make some noise and have some fun! After recruiting John Collins and Mick Hawksworth, opportunity presented itself from the Con Club. The Club had been getting a PA together and sound man, Derek Haggar needed someone to try it on! The band was only too willing. Their first gig was in July 2007 at the Follies Isfield. Calling themselves ‘The Guests’ they supported local band 'The Kondoms'. The evening was a roaring success with the two bands getting together for a jam at the end. It all suddenly seemed real! Changing their name to The Contenders, the band has gone from strength to strength becoming the House band for the Club. The Contenders are: Pete Messer – slide guitar, harmonica and vocals Johnnie ‘Cool’ Collins - Bass guitar and filing Mick Hawksworth – Drums Steve Williams – Guitar and vocals |
