The very first Beer Festival was successfully staged at the Club from Friday to Sunday 25th April 2010. It was the brainchild of Bar Manager Dave Moss, seen proudly posing for a Sussex Express photographer in front of his line of 22 barrels of beer. So good was the picture that the Express published it on their front page! With a special license obtained, it was a weekend open to all as the Club welcomed beer lovers from Lewes and further afield. Beginning in traditional Beer Festival fashion early on Friday evening, it continued not so traditionally with ‘beer drinking music’ on Saturday evening from the ever popular Contenders. Tensions were high behind the bar – was there enough beer, would it run out? Would the Club sell enough beer, would it be left with twenty two half-full barrels? On Sunday relaxation set-in – clearly sufficient had been sold to pronounce the week-end a huge success. The Festival finished on a high on a not-so-lazy Sunday afternoon as members danced along to music from the Moonshine Band. The true highlight of the event however was to see how club members worked together to make it such a success - Derek erecting the scaffolding for the barrels, and too numerous-to-mention-by-name pairs working in shifts across the three days to serve the beer. Appreciation must also go to the beyond the call of duty efforts of Dave and Rick, moving hefty barrels about and working long hours, to all those who selflessly sacrificed their livers by drinking quantities of unfamiliar beers for an entire week-end!
